Michael Kurth, Composer and Bassist

Michael Kurth is a composer and bassist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. I learned about his work from The Cello Sherpa Podcast.

I have been listening to episodes of The Cello Sherpa Podcast. In the episode of May 28, 2021, Joel Dallow interviewed his colleague Michael Kurth, a composer and bassist in the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Dallow included some of Kurth’s music in the podcast, and I enjoyed it, causing me to look further.

Michael Kurth’s website lists his compositions and recordings.

A video of a live recording of Because They Wave Back was released by the Riverside Chamber Players on May 19, 2012.

The Music of Michael Kurth: String Quartets (2013), also played by the Riverside Chamber Players, is available from Apple Music and other streaming services. One of the quartets, “The Boogie Alarm,” is played on the podcast episode, and I like it.

In 2014, ARTS ATL published Preview: ASO contrabassist Michael Kurth debuts two pieces from his side job as composer about pieces by Kurth that were played by different ensembles.

Everything Lasts Forever (2019) contains symphonic compositions by Kurth played by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Robert Spano, conductor.

All Will Be Revealed (Live) is a single recorded by the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra in 2023.

Unfortunately, the Riverside Chamber Players disappeared during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the group’s website no longer exists.
